Why use automatic updates for my PDF Complete software?
Automatic updates have become necessary to maintain well-functioning applications and high standards for customer service. Security concerns mandate regular updates to a number of operating system components and sub-systems. These updates may effect the operation of all installed applications. So many application vendors, including PDF Complete, have adopted the same type of online update process to keep pace with changes. Automatic updates give you the added benefits of:
- Convenience: Updates are delivered directly to your computer. You are occasionally and politely reminded that updates are available for your software. You may choose when to install the updates.
- Quality and Reliability: Software that is kept up to date delivers the best that we have to offer in terms of quality of documents, ease of use, and feature functionality.
- Efficiency and Unobtrusiveness: Updates are quietly downloaded in the background whenever you're connected to the Internet. The downloading process only uses spare bandwidth on your Internet connection. This process will not interfere with other downloads or interrupt you while you work. If you disconnect from the Internet before updates are fully downloaded, the download process will continue the next time you connect to the Internet.

How does automatic updating work?
When your computer is connected to the Internet, via broadband, modem, or wireless, PDF Complete applications periodically check in with our update servers to see if updates have been published that apply to your software. When updates are found, they are downloaded to your computer automatically. Updates are quietly downloaded in the background whenever you're connected to the Internet. The downloading process only uses spare bandwidth on your Internet connection. This process will not interfere with other downloads or interrupt you while you work. If you disconnect from the Internet before updates are fully downloaded, the download process will continue the next time you connect to the Internet.
The downloaded files are saved to a temporary location on your computer until they are installed. When updates are available, a PDF icon will appear in the tray area of your toolbar and a balloon message will inform you that an update is available. After you are notified, the icon will remain visible in the tray for a 24 hour period. If you do not choose to install the update, the reminder will be automatically snoozed for nine days. This behavior is the default setting for any of PDF Complete products.
You may also choose to automatically install any automatically downloaded updates when your computer is restarted. This is most automatic and trouble-free means to install updates as long you normally restart your computer on a regular basis.
Finally, you may select the Check for Updates menu item in the Start Menu, PDF Complete section. If an update has already been automatically downloaded, then the downloaded update will be installed. Otherwise, the process will check the PDF Complete update web site for available updates. If any updates are located, the updates will be immediately downloaded and installed.
How long will it take to download or install an update?
Automatic downloads seem to "instantly" download because the update process has been working in the background to serve you with updated software. If you choose the "Check for Update" menu option, the download times will vary based the speed of your Internet connection. In general, our updates are no larger than 5 to 10 megabytes in size. The time for installation can also vary, but is generally less than one minute.
Does the computer need to be restarted after an update?
PDF Complete products contain system level components take occasionally require your computer to be restarted after an update. The majority of software updates do not require a system restart. We strive to prevent required computer restarts.
Do the updates require that I agree to a new End User License Agreement?
Each time that you install updates, you will be presented with a link to an online End User License Agreement that governs the use of our software and any updates to that software. Please review this license before installing any updates. If you do not agree with the license, you should immediately uninstall the PDF Complete product.
What if I am not an Administrator for my computer?
PDF Complete products require a user with Administrative rights to install and update the software. The reason for this requirement is that system level components such as printer drivers and services are required for our PDF applications. These components can only be installed by an Administrator. If you can not start the Check for Update process, please contact the Administrator of your computer for assistance.
How much do automatic updates cost? Am I obligating myself to future purchases?
PDF Complete automatic updates are always free and are without obligation. In some cases, we will update your product to include more features and functions than existed in the original product. These features and functions are without cost and/or obligation.
Privacy Policy for Automatic Updates
PDF Complete provides an online update service to provide improved versions our software. These updates are provided to correct operational defects and provide additional feature functionality to our users. As part of the software update process, we collect the following information: a statistically unique number (but not a Windows GUID), the serial number, your IP address, software version, type of operating system, the number of pages and documents that have been created, the number of users, installation language, and the number of days used.
We collect this information in order to help us better understand the usage patterns of our products to provide more timely and relevant updates. We also use this information for planning and forecasting server loads, upgrade patterns, licensing, and purchasing patterns. The information is also used to generate aggregate statistics about how our software, web site, and update services are used so that we may provide the best possible support to our customers. Any information that is collected during the update process is subject to the terms set forth in our Privacy Policy.
To change how updates are downloaded and installed
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure.
- Click Start, point to All Programs, click PDF Complete, and then click Options and Setting.
- Select the Automatic Updates tab. You can select from the following options:
Automatic (recommended)
When you are connected to the Internet, updates are downloaded in the background. You are not notified or interrupted during this process and the updates do not interfere with other downloads. Any updates that have been downloaded to your computer will be installed when your computer is restarted.
Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them
With this option, updates will be downloaded to your computer and you will be notified that updates are ready to be installed. To receive update alerts, you must be a member of the Administrators group for your computer. When you are connected to the Internet, updates are downloaded in the background. You are not notified or interrupted during this process and the updates do not interfere with other downloads. After downloading is complete, a PDF icon appears in the notification area and a notification message pops up, letting you know that the updates are ready to be installed. To install available updates, click the icon or the alert.
Notify me but don't automatically download or install updates
To manually download and install updates, you must be a member of the Administrators group for your computer. Click Start, point to All Programs, click PDF Complete, and then click Check for Updates. PDF Complete checks for available updates and notifies you of updates, but does not download or install updates until you select the Install Now button.
Administrator Notes: Only users with administrator privileges may add or remove programs, including PDF Complete updates. It is strongly recommended that you log out of the computer administrator account when you are not performing tasks that require administrator privileges. If you are logged on as an administrator when your computer is the target of a virus or malicious user, the attack can cause extensive damage.
